In depth: Man vs WIld vs Survivorman

Survivorman

VS

Man vs. Wild - Season 1 (6 DVD set)

Survivorman

Pros:
  • He's one tough mother. He doesn't need a camera man
  • He's Canadian and Canadians are awesome
  • Teaches all sort of practical techniques that will really help you survive
  • Puts himself alone in precarious situations for a week at a time. Uh huh, he's bad.
  • His tips have saved lives including a man who was lost in the snow for 5 days without supplies

Cons:
  • Often cheats, carrying along equipment the average man wouldn't have with him
  • From time to time teaches impractical techniques
  • Always looks miserable and lacks the personality to always carry an hour long show
  •  Wimped out after 3 seasons and called it quits

Man vs Wild

Pros:
  • Seriously tough; he's done just about everything dangerous you can think of including being one of the youngest Brits to ever climb Everest
  • Youngest Chief Scout
  • Teaches you amazing strategies to survive harsh environments
  • Very personable and easy to watch marathons of his
  • Risks his life by creating situations every episode that could easily kill him
  • His nickname is Bear
  • Already more seasons that Survivorman and still going
  • He's British, and the British are awesome
  • A young kid last year who got lost credited the show with helping him survive
  • Goes the distance to show you survival tricks including drinking his own urine, giving himself an enema on a raft, drinking fluid from elephant scat and eating an apple from a bear's scat
Cons:
  • Goes the distance to show you survival tricks including drinking his own urine, giving himself an enema on a raft, drinking fluid from elephant scat and eating an apple from a bear's scat
  • Cheats by having a camera crew there that can assist him if needed
  • While he still does everything presented, he has all sorts of safety measures setup
  • Often teaches a lot techniques that are impractical for the average man to think of trying
  • One can only watch someone eating flesh from a half devoured carcass so many times
In the end while both have their positive points as well as their drawbacks, to me Bear Grylls is by far the winner. He has the personality and though he may not be in as dangerous of circumstances as Les Stroud having people around to assist if needed, this really just means that he's able to take more chances and do things that Les never could. And while I do love Les, he does so many stupid things that don't make sense throughout the series. Bear does as well, but that's part of his charm.

Sorry to fans of Survivorman but Man vs Wild is clearly the better show.

  1. After watching "Grizzly Man" everything pales in comparison.

  2. I was really starting to lose faith in you, with all of that mascot hoopla going on...it seemed you just didn't know how to pick 'em.

Faith restored! I can't watch that other guy arrgghhh, I don't know who whines through his show more, me or him...I especially hate it when he gets a shot of himself walking off and you know he's just going to have to turn around and go back for the camera.

Also, Bear is HOT, and that doesn't hurt matters any, don't you agree?
