By The Numbers: Ryan Reynolds - Plus a new scoring system!

After receiving some criticisms over my scoring system I have retooled it to be what I hope is a bit more fair to both sides of the argument. I will not however be changing my opinion that 'Ok' belongs in the positive column, and I will now explain the reason for this.

To my estimation an ok movie is maybe not something you'd buy, but that you still enjoy watching occasionally. Those movies that you'll stop and watch even a few minutes if you catch it while flipping through channels. They're far from perfect, but they're also far from unwatchable. So while not good, definitely not bad.

Alright, now, how the system works and how it's been retooled:

I take all the films an actor or actress has been in and break them down into three categories, 'Good' 'Bad' and 'Ok.' I do not count TV appearances or Made for TV movies. Afterwards a quick analysis will show whether or not they're a good actor by the numbers. Invariably there is a 2-3 +/- point bias on a person to person basis. Also, since 'ok' movies are not bad they count towards the positive column in the overall figuring.

The new scoring system is as follows; instead of going with the standard, where they just have to be above 50% positive to be considered a good actor, I now score as if I was grading a test, but with a different ratio. Anyone falling in the 50-60% will be considered bad; 61-70% good; 71-80% great, and anything higher, should it come up, will be Elite.

Now that I've got that out of the way, let us see how Ryan Reynolds faired:

Interesting thing, he has two movies which have currently been playing festivals, but haven't been released yet, so I couldn't say how he'll fair after them. Even by the old system with a 50-50 split, he'd officially be a 'bad' actor. Shame really, as I quite like him. Thems the breaks I guess. As cool as he is, he tends to make a lot of bad decisions. If I counted TV, well, he'd still probably be bad since he's done some bad TV movies as well. Course he also did Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place, which I loved. Oh well, he's still young, hopefully he'll make better choices in the future.

Now that I got a new grading system, I'm ready for some suggestions for the following weeks. If you've got a good one, please feel free to drop it in the comments below.

  1. This is too funny and Ryan Reynolds is really eye candy for me in most movies ;) He is kind of a one-dimensional actor and my favorite movie with him in it is probably Waiting. That movie makes me laugh so hard.

You may not see it, but whenever Geof is watching Heroes the dude that plays Sylar (Zachary Quinto) talks exactly like Ryan Reynolds. Close your eyes and listen. It cracks me up.

  2. I liked him in "Waiting" and that is about it. Okay, "Van Wilder" was moderately funny but when he was in the remake of "The Amityville Horror" I think I was truly offended.

  3. Jules, that's hysterical, I'm going to have to try that.

Lisa, I think the remake of Amityville, was pretty offensive in general. I barely made it through it.

  4. I've only walked out on one movie in my entire life. That was the "Amityville Horror" remake. Not many actors can say they were in one of the worst movies every made... He can!

  5. Yeah, Amityville he was good in. Actually, he is in Green Lantern (DC's Iron-man). Could up his stock in '11.

  6. Yeah but he's also going to be doing Deadpool, and if it's anywhere near as bad as Wolverine, then the stock would keep at even.

Maybe he's just a perfect balance of greatness and crap?

  7. I have to agree... I like him, but his movies are typically not all that great... ah well... maybe once he has this assessment he can make better choices!

  9. TS, I gotta tell you, I was all about Ryan back in his Nickelodeon days as a Canadian teen actor on a show called Fifteen. Wowzas he was cute! I love how you grade these stars. So cool!

  10. Do we get to see a breakdown of which performances scored which grade?

It's really depends on what kind of mood I'm in when it comes to Ryan Reynolds....

However, I do have to admit that one of my favorite Ryan Reynold's scenes was the opening to 'Just Friends' when his overweight teenage self is lip-syncing 'I Swear' by 'All-4-One' into his hairbrush.... Maybe it hit a little close to home.... lol

  11. I'm not sure how long it takes you to look into the movies (I would think a while) but a snapshot of SNL alums would be interesting ... especially by class.

Like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray ... those two I'd put in the same group.

Then Adam Sandler, Farley, Spade in another group.

    Somewhere Martin Short.

Probably others too, just not thinking of them.

I feel like those guys in general have a few comedic hits, but mostly produce crap.
