By The Numbers: Steve Buscemi

Yeah, yeah he's a movie star. We'll talk about that more in a minute. As I was going through his lengthy credits I passed by Pete and Pete. Anyone remember that show? Kid's show with two brothers, both named Pete. Only had, I think, 3 seasons, but I used to love that show. I forgot Buscemi did a couple episodes.

Alright, an explanation of how this all works for anyone new.

I take all the films an actor or actress has been in and break them down into three categories, 'Good' 'Bad' and 'Ok.' I do not count TV appearances or Made for TV movies. Afterwards a quick analysis will show whether or not they're a good actor by the numbers. Invariably there is a 2-3 +/- point bias on a person to person basis. Also, since 'ok' movies are not bad they count towards the positive column in the overall figuring. If by the numbers they fall in the 50 - 60% range, they're a bad actor; 61 - 70% good actor, and 71 - 80% great actor. Anything higher is unlikely, but will be classified as "elite."

Now let's see those numbers:

I know a lot of you who read my blog are Buscemi fans. I am too. That said he barely limps into the good column. When I began on the list I was sure it would be an easy win. But I forgot how many horrible kids movies and bad Adam Sandler films he's been in, not to mention his early career was littered with duds. This one is so tight that a single movie the other way and he'd register poorly. Nevertheless with a total of 61% positive over 39% negative, Steve Buscemi is officially a good actor. He's got some great looking films coming up so let's hope he stays on the good path.

Thanks to Ally for choosing this week's pick!

  1. Bad Adam Sandler movies are still good though. His scene in Billy Madison with the lipstick, epic.

    Let's see Pauly Shore next

  2. You'd better not be referring to Billy Madison as "bad" movie. That movie is pure gold. Idiotic, but still awesome.

Powdered Toast Man agrees with me...I think.

  10. I've seen him a lot, I like him a lot, and he scares me a lot. But is it a problem that my favorite role he's done is playing a chameleon-salamander in Monsters Inc.?

  13. I think his role in Reservoir Dogs should be enough to carry him into the Good. I actually laughed my ass off at his role in Big Daddy.
