The 7 Word Weekend Review 06/18/10

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

The Killer Inside Me (limited) - Shh, you had me at Michael Winterbottom.

8: The Mormon Proposition (limited) - I heard they don't drink soda either.

Jonah Hex - I'd have watched it for Thomas Jane.

Toy Story 3 - Contrary to the non-review, I can't wait.

Last night I had a dream that 7-11 had finally opened up in Tennessee, only to find when I walked in, it was a hollow shell left unfinished. A psychiatrist might say it symbolized unfulfilled desires in my life; things that remain seemingly, perpetually out of reach. I just think it means it's been a long time since I had a Slurpee.

Thomas Jane lobbied for the role of Jonah Hex. It obviously didn't go to him. I don't really have anything against Josh Brolin, other than the fact that I don't think he's that personable. I don't know why but he always gives me this Beau Bridges vibe. And everyone knows Jeff is the money Bridges. At any rate, While Thomas Jane isn't my favorite actor, that kind of passion might have helped push forward a product that actually looks appealing. I love the character from the comics, but I've heard too many bad things about the movie, and the advertising has completely left me cold.

Away We GoI like John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, so I'm surprised it took me this long to see Away We Go. For those of you haven't seen it, the film is the story of two people who are having a baby and looking to move somewhere for a fresh start. It's filled with wacky side characters performed by the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jim Gaffigan, and Allison Janney. Gyllenhall in particular shines in her role of an absurdly cultish mother, who believes in keeping her children as close as possible (when we first see her she's breast feeding an older child). The film is not straight comedy though and manages to hit some very deep emotional strides. If you're looking for a good stay in movie, this is a good pick. 8 out of 10

Well, that's it for me this week. Have a great weekend everyone.

  1. I'm convinced anything with Megan Fox in it is terrible.I guess being pretty doesn't make one a good actress.

  2. So you are telling me that your quintesential hillbilly backwater state has NO 7-11s?? NONE? K...getting a neck ache from my head spinning around. That is like saying ya'll don't marry your cousins cause you do.

GET OUT NOW. You are too smart for that state. I hear South Carolina is nice.

Personally I don't drink Slurpies because I always forget that I am drinking a slurpie and give myself terminal brain freeze. But to have to settle for an inferior slushie drink is a crime.

They also have the BEST hotdogs.

  3. Cal, I had no idea when I moved here that there were no 7-11s in the state. The closest one I believe is like 2 states away.

  4. I just want to do one of those package drops that UNICEF does for people in deprived areas of the world. They could drop you a slurpie machine but I worry that you may not have electricity yet to run it.

  6. So do we get a real review of Toy Story 3 when you go out and see it?

  7. It got 100% positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes so you know it has to be terrific. I hear much sentimental tears will be shed by all.

  10. I'm in Rhode Island, and we don't really have a lot of 7-11s either. I can think of two of them, and I think there might be a third or fourth in the northern part of the state. Chain gas stations - Exxon, Mobil - are much more common, and there is a semi-local company called Cumberland Farms that has been entrenched in the prime locations near beaches for years and years.

I've also wanted to check out that Maya Rudolph and "Jim from The Office" movie for a while now, but I've never gotten around to it. I'll have to give it a shot based on your recommendation.

  11. Tennessee is Jack Daniel's country. They probably have JD slurpees at the Quikee Mart I suspect.

I still wanna see Jonah Hex...I just hope they haven't shown all the best parts in the trailers.

  15. I looovvveee Away We Go. For some reason, indie romance/life type things are awesome. It's just so quirky and wonderful.

  16. I was just contemplating watching Away We Go tonight, but it got too late. You giving it high marks gives me the confidence to make an effort to see it.
