The 7 Word Weekend Review 07/02/10

New movie releases reviewed in 7 words each

Love Ranch (limited) - Sounds like a cheesy 70's television program.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - I think everyone knows how I feel.

The Last Airbender - Dear America, please don't see this film.

Maybe that's harsh. But I've said it elsewhere though so it only seems right I say it here. Shyamalan's last good film in my opinion was Signs. If we could erase from memory history the stream of bad films that came thereafter maybe I could remember what it felt like to be anticipating a new film from him. Mind you that has nothing to do with how I feel about his new movie. The Last Airbender doesn't look interesting to me as a stand alone film even without bias. For all I know it could be the square root of awesomeness. Though I doubt it. Really, I just hope no one goes to see it. Because if it's a success, then he'll get to make more movies. Do you want another The Village or The Happening, plaguing the multiplexes? Of course not, you're good people. So remember this holiday weekend, buying a ticket is casting a vote in Hollywood, so vote no on proposition yes.

As far as Twilight goes, yesterday I featured a story about a bulimic vampire. At this points any other digs I might take at it could be considered slightly overdoing things. Although I do love the fact that it wasn't a top trending topic on twitter.

As it's the 4th this weekend, I'm not going to recommend any rentals to watch (though if you're going to watch something, Yankee Doodle Dandy is a family favorite for the fourth). There be fireworks people. What better entertainment then that?

And to those of my friends up north, a belated happy Canada Day!

Have a great weekend everyone.

  1. I think your 7-word-reviews are all spot-on. Really, I agree with you. Especially when it comes to Twilight--nothing more needs to be said.

    Have a nice weekend too!

  2. Twilight is one of those things that we NORMALS just have to put up with. It will go away soon enough. Just wait till they see the plotline of the NEXT book - the werewolf and the baby? The studio will shit their pants.

'Last Airbender' was a terrific cartoon and a great idea for a movie trilogy but not in M Night's hands. I guess it's getting savaged by the critics. Why do people keep giving this guy money to make movies. Any good will he earned from 'Sixths Sense' is gone.

I do have to admit that I love 'Unbreakable' but I think he just fluked into that one.

  3. So TS, should I hide away in shame if I loved "The Village"? I seem to always be in the minority on that one, but the minority is where I spend most of my time anyway, so I'm cool. (Case in point, I think Brad Pitt is a good actor. See?)

But I'll admit it scares me a bit to agree with Cal about "Unbreakable". The day I start agreeing with Cal is the day I know my brain has officially begun to slide to the dark side.

But if I have to be on Team Twilight, or Team Shyamalan, I definitely pick Shyamalan.

  4. Cal, I thought unbreakable was alright. Kind of boring in places. I love Signs though, even if he did rip off The Day of the Triffids and Night of the living dead. As far as the next in Twilight series, they already know what to expect which is why they're splitting it into two movies. Play it up for all it's worth.

Rep, I forgive you for liking The Village. It wasn't his worst film. It didn't suck out loud like Lady in the Water. It just sort of sat in the corner and quietly sucked.

  5. I need to research Love Ranch, limited sometimes mean I'll like it. Twilight is lameeeee.

  6. MNS movies in my house are polarizing...I watch 'em intrigued and my wife looks for the gun to shoot the TV. I will admit his movies are a bubble or two off but I have watched them all...to the end.

  7. Ebert utterly destroyed Airbender in his review. I thought the previews for it looked OK, but I tend to go with the critics on action movies, since any action movie trailer can look decent for two minutes.

  8. I think you were kinder than most critics in regards to "The Last Airbender."
