CassaStar - Reviewed by Alex J. Cavanaugh

Today I am pleased to present you with the first installment in a new series of authors reviewing their own works. Alex J. Cavanaugh, author of  CassaStar, has ever so graciously agreed to write a review of his book which was released yesterday. Many of you already know Alex through the blogging community. For those of you who don't I encourage you to stop by his blog after finishing here. I have been psyched for the release and can't wait to get my copy.

The Premise:

To pilot the fleet’s finest ship… Few options remain for Byron. A talented but stubborn young man with a troubled past and rebellious attitude, his cockpit skills are his only hope. Slated to train as a Cosbolt fighter pilot, Byron is determined to prove his worth and begin a new life as he sets off for the moon base of Guaard. Much to Byron’s chagrin, the toughest instructor in the fleet takes notice of the young pilot. Haunted by a past tragedy, Bassa eventually sees through Byron's tough exterior and insolence. When a secret talent is revealed during training, Bassa feels compelled to help Byron achieve his full potential. As war brews on the edge of space, time is running short. Byron requires a navigator of exceptional quality to survive, and Bassa must make a decision that could well decide the fate of both men. Will their skills be enough as they embark on a mission that may stretch their abilities to the limit? “…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” - Library Journal

Alex's Review:
Set against the backdrop of war, CassaStar tells the tale of Byron, an arrogant hotshot pilot, and his struggle for acceptance. His reluctance to play by the rules places him with a hard-as-nails navigator who is just waiting for him to fail. Age and wisdom are pitted against reckless youth in moments that rival the exciting, fast-paced space battles between Cassan military and Vindicarn invaders. This isn’t your hyper-jargon, techno-babble, slow-the-plot-down-to-a-crawl science fiction tale. Those who like great characters and exciting space adventure will enjoy CassaStar.
Of course, I may be biased…

  3. Thanks!

I thought about making the review all funny and snarky, but that didn't feel right, then I thought about really going all out as if it were the greatest book ever, and that definitely didn't feel right, so I went with this.

Writing one's own review really sucks!

  4. Alex, you may be biased, but that doesn't mean what you said isn't true. I've already read the book and I loved it...

  5. Is it like Top Gun but set in outer space?

  7. PTM, I've heard that more than once. I guess it's a bit like Top Gun, although it wasn't intentional!

  8. Awesome stuff!!! (Not to mention a writer who isn't "into himself" since he actually took the time to introduce himself to me just because I mentioned I had seen his name all over the blogosphere, but didn't know who he was.)

  9. Can an author be biased about his own work? Surely not!

  11. Marlene, I was just happy to see your comments so many places - thank you!

    Lee, it can happen!

    Thanks again, TS.

  12. This is why I love your blog. You take something as formulaic as a movie review or an obituary or an interview and you turn it on it's head.

Nobody does those kinds of posts like you. To read them is to instantly see how unique and entertaining a blooger you are.

I can never finish your sentences in my head because I have no idea where you are going until I finish reading and for me that is such a blessing.

I hate people who are so easy to figure out and you, my friend, will never be accused of that.

  13. Dang - I thought this was a joke based on the title (you pretending to be the author) ... but that is very cool. And awesome of you to let him talk about his book on your site. Very cool and I'll be checking out his site.

  15. Brad, no he really had me write my own review!

Thanks, Chuck - that would be awesome!

  16. I really hope the book does well. That's so awesome that you, Alex, got published, as it is a dream of many bloggers (I assume). The only reason I'll wait to read it is because (heresy) I'm (forgive me) getting (don't hurt me) a Kindle soon. So after that I'll let you know what I think.
