Mathew McConaughey: Peaked

Sure we know and love (or hate) actors all throughout their lengthy careers, but that doesn't mean they didn't already at some point deliver their greatest performance. In this new column I aim to remember each actor or actress's greatest performance. The one moment where they truly peaked.

Today's featured performer:
Mathew McConaughey (AKA Bongo Boy)

Maybe you know him best for his endless stream of rom-coms. Perhaps you loved him in Dazed and Confused or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Aside from the romantic comedies, he tends to choose diverse roles. Now I'm sure there are several who would think that the obvious peaks for him would be A Time To Kill or Edtv or perhaps even Frailty. All good films, but not the crest of his performances.

For that we have to look to 1996's Larger Than Life; the entirely underrated Bill Murray film about a motivational speaker who inherits an elephant and must take her cross country.  About halfway through the film Murray tricks a paranoid, caffeine driven, psycho truck driver into giving him and the elephant a ride. Tip Tucker is the kind of over the top role that takes a special talent to give it the proper life it needs. McConaughey with southern twang spitting out words at a furious pace is the right man for the job. While the rest of the movie is subtle and laid back with both style and humor, he's the crazy that holds it together.

Truly a performance that he'll never be able to top and thus his peak. It was either that or Guy #2 in My Boyfriend's Back, another underrated classic film.

  1. Wow! You got me on MBB and LTL. You are the master sir. Though truly I feel his best work was A time to Kill. I don't think he was stoned or naked in that picture.

  3. This is a great feature. Hope to see more of it in the future.

I'd also like to see more nudity on the website. There isn't enough boobs.
