True Confessions Vol.2: The Wonder Years

I have a dark secret to divulge. Something I've kept hidden for many years and only now in front of you feel it's okay to speak openly about. It's a very sensitive subject but here goes.

Confession Number 2: The Wonder Years

I've never hid the fact that I was a somewhat odd child. While other kids were running around screaming, I sat quietly and pondered why they were so loud. I also had what could be considered a very vivid imagination. A blessing while telling stories and a curse at night when going to sleep. As such, bizarre things used to give me the shivers. While my pro-Boy Meets World, anti-The Wonder Years stance has been known for years, one of the reasons hasn't.

The Wonder Years used to freak me out.

Not in the traditional scary horror sort of way. Something about the tone of the show; the way it was narrated and the way the sound had this almost muted quality, just seemed eery to me. It was the same feeling I got when I watched claymation. What? You don't find claymation creepy? Try watching Davy and Goliath at 5am in the morning before the sun is up and the house is quiet. They may be preaching Christian values, but that doesn't mean they don't want to eat you, just a little.

I was like that as a kid though. Odd things would give me nightmares. While The Wonder Years never produced any bad dreams, for some reason it left me feeling unsettled. You know that scene in Miracle Mile where the helicopter lands in the La Brea Tar Pits? The feeling I got watching the show was like a lesser version of the feeling I had during that scene. A sense of finality. Now I find that scene laughable but when you're 8 it's terrifying.

Course, I suppose a little self analysis might suggest that fearing a show about reliving the past would be in effect fearing aging. Which would in turn suggest ultimately a fear of time itself. A really deep and mature fear for a kid of that age to have. One might say that I had an old wise soul.

Okay, so as a 6 year old I thought Kevin's father and mother looked like angry monsters. But it sounds better the other way.

Still, fair is fair, so the other night, with the lights out I watched a few episodes of the show. As an adult who doesn't really fear anything anymore (except for claymation monsters coming to life) I figured to give it a fair shake. This time around it didn't scare me at all. I was too bored to feel anything else.

So that's my second confession. I find The Wonder Years boring. I understand if some of you feel like shunning me after this.

  2. I loved the Wonder Years! Just like Kevin I had an older brother who constantly kicked the crud out of me. I could relate.

  3. Oh, Davey.

I didn't think Winnie was all that pretty.
I probably never watched the show until I saw the movie The Wizard.

  4. I LOVED WY. But then again, half the shows I watch from that era (that i rediscover) aren't nearly as funny. Except NYPD blue. And yes, clay (or woodmation) used to freak me out. I seriously thought Goliath was God commanding Davy to do all sorts of odd things. Poor Sally.

  5. I always thought it was creepy, too....
The Wonder Years has always depressed me in an odd way.

And I never understood why Kevin was so attracted to Winnie Cooper.

  6. You always impress me, TS. I'd say your fears of that show were due to the fact that you always had a brilliant brain. Me, on the other hand, loved that show. Davey and Goliath, though -that was one scary Christian dog!

  7. Yes, TS, I now shun you.

I do so because you said I could.

    Though, I don't remember why.

But explain to me how I've never heard of Davy/Davey and Goliath, and never watched the Wonder Years because I thought it was for older kids, yet I'm older than you. Did you bend space-time as a kid?

  8. Rep, My sisters watched the Wonder Years and I was around, so that's why I watched. How have you never heard of Davey and Goliath? I thought everyone knew it.

  9. Haha irrational fears never fail to make me happy (because I have a few).

Boy Meets World timed up perfectly for my age so I related to it quite a bit. And Wonder Years did always seem a bit gloomy - more like they were going for adults thinking back on youth. Like A Christmas Story.

  10. Brad, Yeah you're right, Wonder Years is like a depressing Christmas Story. Boy Meets World on the other hand... awesome.

  12. I hated 'The Wonder Years' too. I hated Kevin's older brother and never figured out why, in the middle of the night, Kevin didn't just beat him to death with a pillow case full of combination locks. That's what I would have done. And while his sister was cute, I found her to be gloomy beyond believe. But that's just me.

  14. Seductress, I think you're hilarious.

Kal, I'm with you completely. His brother should have died the death of a thousand deaths.

Marlene, It's my number one fear. lol

  15. The dad in that show scared me. He looks kind of evil. I also never thought that Whinnie was that attractive. A lot of guys have a thing for her.

  16. I wasn't scared of the show, but I did try to avoid it. I thought it was boring

  17. The Wonder Years is one of the best ever made. The music was wonderful. This is classic television and if you want classical music, music that has been around for a very long time and much loved by many.

  18. The older brother was so mean and hateful, and he never seemed to get his comeuppance. I used to wish he'd be maimed by bigger bullies, or lose limbs in a car crash, but it never happened. It was a real hole in the plot.

  19. Try Gumby, Pokey, Prickle [No, not the porn flick] and The Block Heads -- takes it to another level.

  20. Full of old classics, that will bring you music from an entire generation. Must be purchased.
