Battle of the Decades – First Round

Time for another epic battle. And since we are now a solid decade past the previous century, that gives us all the distance for reflection that we need to start a big messy winner-takes-all battle between the decades of the 1900s. Of course, we here at the Non-Review, tend to faint at the sight of blood, so instead of us stepping onto the battlefield, we’ll let your votes decide who wins each battle. Then we’ll stand at a safe, and less nauseating, distance to simply tally the votes to declare a winner. So let’s get to it. Here are our first two contenders:

1980s
Your proudest achievements:
I went and blew up Mount St. Helens, then I kicked down that stinkin’ Berlin Wall. But even better, I got IBM to start selling the very first PCs, and then I found the Titanic! Woohoo! And as if that wasn’t enough, I also gave birth to TS Hendrik.
Things you don’t like to talk about:
I got a little clumsy after drinking New Coke, and ended up punching a nice big hole in the Ozone. Then I accidentally blew up that Challenger Space Shuttle. Unfortunately I also spilled some stuff in Chernobyl, and also in Alaska with the Exxon Valdez.

1930s
Your proudest achievements:
I stopped that annoying Prohibition thing in America, which I have to admit is quite ironic since I also founded Alcoholics Anonymous. Then, with a few beers in my system, I built myself a dam. And that Hoover Dam turned out so well, I decided to build the Empire State Building—which of course needed air-conditioning, so I invented that too.
Things you don’t like to talk about:
I accidently lost Amelia Earhart. Sorry. Then I thought I totally made up for it by finding Pluto, but now, of course, it’s—well, I don’t want to talk about it. And I’m really sorry about that whole Hindenberg thing, but I swear I didn’t mean to start WWII.

So which of these two is the greater decade? You tell us by casting your vote, for one or the other, in the comments section. On Saturday we’ll announce the winner (so vote before then), and then throw two other decades up against each other, for round two.

  1. I lived through the 80s, my formative teenage years, and they brought me video games and pornography.

I know almost nothing about the 30s (I know more about the 20s and 40s).

Therefore, by default, I vote 80s.

  2. Well, well, well. I see that TS is scraping the bottom of the Reputation barrel these days for material. Fine, I'll bite.

Since this is an entertainment blog, I'll keep my arguments focused on that one topic. (I needed something to reign me in on this one.)

The thirties or, 'The Golden Age of Hollywood', brought us films like: Swing Time, It Happened One Night , Bringing Up Baby, (Which I believe my man TS is a fan of.) My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth, Frankenstein, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (with my friend, Gary Cooper), Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz and many (well, several) more.

While the 80's, or the era of the Brat Pack, brought us:
A Christmas Story, Nightmare on Elm Street, Adventures In Babysitting, Annie, Back To The Future, Big Trouble In Little China, The Burbs, Cocoon, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. To name a few.

I think it's clear which decade has my vote. I mean, isn't it obvious?

    Talley that.

  3. born in the late 70s, I was too young to really understand the 80's.

but I'm gonna vote 30's cause things just seemed cooler then

  4. Um, duh! If the 80's are responsible for TS Hendrik than they totally win. In fact, with that kind of cred, I don't think this is really even a fair battle - no one stands a chance against that! - G

  5. I'm taking the 80's. Yeah. You heard me.

  6. Since I already lived through the 80s, I'd have to pick the 1930s....
The only truly great thing I can remember about the 80s is Nintendo.

  7. Born in the early 70's ...80's saw me move to an awesome city that shaped me, I discovered all things western (inclding Clint Eastwood).
India in 30's was still under British Rule, so life would have been tough and mediocre...
So its "back to the future" for me...

  8. Not really a fair fight, considering I grew up in the 80's and owned several jelly bracelets.

I'm going to vote 30's. I like to cheer for the underdog.

  9. Totally the 80's!!! Where I grew up, anyway, the 30's were referred to as "The Dirty Thirties", and not for porn, either. It was the time of the Great Depression...and drought. It was dirty. Ick.

  10. 1980s, now and forever.

  11. 30's and here is my logic. If I were stuck on a desert island I would rather be stuck there with a decade resourceful and resilient enough to handle recession, poverty, dust bowl etc. than a decade that always had trouble programming their new fancy VCRs.

  12. You know how it begins and ends with the 80s for me. The age of video when it replaced the radio star. This opposed to the 30s where everyone who spoke on radio for the first time sounded like a goober. Plus to look for pussified polititions you need not look further than the 30s for individuals who alled Hitler to rise to power and lead us to the Second World War. In the eighties we ended the Cold War. I got a million of these people. 80s had better cartoons too. 'nuff said.

  13. 30's for me!
The 80's just plain old sucked!
Seriously, the 60's and 70's were a tough act to follow. Right?

  14. I am really leaning toward the end of prohibition decade but I am torn about the TS Hendrik birthing.

Since I somewhat remember the 80's I am going with the 30's.

  15. Despite the fact that the 80's were my birth decade as well I'm going to go with the 30's. The glamor of the decade gets to me.

  16. I missed the vote but have to weight in: the 80's gave birth to BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2, so there is only one possible answer here!
