7 Word Weekend Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Hangover II

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

The Hangover Part II - Remember the first one? Yeah... same thing.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Just not as classy without Roman numerals.

I guess this is the weekend of sequels. Too bad they didn't squeeze all the sequels this year into one weekend. It'd be like after Thanksgiving; bunch of leftovers no wants.

Zing? Meh, beats putting an effort in.

Let me preface by saying that I actually enjoyed The Hangover. I thought it had a lot of funny moments, and it was filled with quotable lines. That said I really have no desire to see the sequel. I didn't think it needed a sequel, and this one looks like an almost carbon copy of the first. I'm sure it will do gangbusters this weekend, most likely prompting a third film. I just really hope they stop at three. But who am I kidding? After the main stars are done it'll continue to spawn sequels in the DTV market for years to come. They'll fill Comedy Central's downtime for the next decade. Then, one day, about 7 years from now, they'll start looking at the anniversary as a possible reboot date, and the whole thing will get fresh legs. Wow, I'm a bit cynical today. Let's move on to different subject shall we?

Hey, guess what? It's a sequel to Kung Fu Panda! Probably expecting me continue the diatribe I started in the above paragraph. But I hold no ill will here. I can't possibly have anything against this sequel. Stop living in the last paragraph people. Time to move on. In terms of kid's flicks, the sequel score is always different. For some reason it just works. Maybe because the quality animated films know it's about keeping the parents happy with decent entertainment while the little ones are just pleased to see a fat animal prance around. Alright, I like to watch the fat animals prance too.

The first Kung Fu Panda was surprisingly clever and well done. There's been little half hour specials for holidays that I've caught that were pretty lame, but that's mostly for advertising and you can't really expect quality from them. I'm actually up for seeing the new one when it hits video. Obviously there'll be reused gags, but as long as the bulk is an original enough story, it should be fun.

Short post again, but hey, it's hard to concentrate when it's the long-ish weekend ahead.
Have a great one everybody!

  1. I have still not seen the first kung fu panda.  Which is odd considering it comes on USA or TBS once a day and I like Martial Arts and have kids.  My kids have seen it, but I haven't.

The first Hangover was funny, but once was enough. I'm checking out Kung Fu Panda 2 this weekend.

  4. I'll admit that KP2 is one I want to see. Maybe it's the martial arts-ness of it... and the fact that I have a weird crush on Jack Black. I said it.

  8. I was waiting eagerly for the Panda sequel...loved the first one. I actually liked Hangover as it was highly recommended by a cousin whose movie choices I trust; though its more a guy's version of the Bridesmaids ? or something similar...Not sure of the sequel unless he says its good enough. Enjoy your weekend.

  10. I haven't seen either one of them, but Hangover II, from all accounts (well, at least the accounts that I've spoken to, which are actuall "no-accounts") said it is pretty darn funny! So I'll see it...when it's free that is...
