7 Word Weekend Movie Review: Mr. Popper's Penguins and Green Lantern

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

The Art of Getting By (limited) - Guess I'm an artist. Support the arts.

Green Lantern - That suit, 3D... I don't think so.

Mr. Popper's Penguins - Sounds like a soon to fail restaurant.

So, things have been pretty crazy lately and as such I've been considering giving up blogging. Problem is, I really love the work I've put into this site, so at least for the time being I'm just going to cut it down to posting only once or twice a week. I'm probably still looking at taking a hiatus in the future, but hopefully things will settle down and I'll be able to keep TNR going.

Now to the movies...

Green Lantern is obviously the big ticket this weekend. I've not really heard a lot of good things about it. Supposedly the effects are pretty great, and the end battle is good, but otherwise the script craps out. I'll be honest, the only version of Green Lantern I ever liked was Keith Giffen's interpretation of Guy Gardner. However, as far as it goes, Ryan Reynolds seems like the perfect fit for Hal Jordan. I'll probably give it a shot in the future, but I just don't see myself shelling out to see it in theater.

I was an avid reader when I was a kid. I read way above my age group in school. But when it came to Mr. Popper's Penguins, I avoided it like crazy. I tried it a couple times because it was popular, but it never took. Just seemed boring to me. So I can't say I really have much interest in the new adaptation. Jim Carrey has his moments. When he does less slapstick, maybe throws a little drama into the mix, he can be great. I just have the feeling a kid's movie is going to condense his act down into a thick syrup of stupid faces and tired physical  comedy poured over a bed of used joke pancakes. Passed on it as a kid, I'll pass on it now.

Mmm... Pancakes and syrup...

Well, have a great weekend everyone!

  7. You already can guess which movie I want to see. I see it's playing in two theaters out here, of course they're like a thirty minute ride ... and I'm hating you for making me want pancakes right now.

  8. A boring weekend for sure and would be downright boring without your witty movie reviews. Take a break but don't give up blogging. Have a less stressful week ahead.

  10. At this moment, I can't even think about movies. If you shut the doors here, I will be truly sad. You are one of the most creative, funny and entertaining people I know of. Plus you are a great guy.  I've been with you almost since you just started here...

  12. Yup. Giffen is one of my favorites if for no other reason than Ambush Bug.
