7 Word Weekend Movie Review: X-Men: First Class, Submarine, and I Play the Game

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Beginners - Christopher Plummer is never going to die.

Submarine (limited) - Shh, you had me at Richard Ayoade.

X-Men: First Class - Proposed Tagline: Give these mutants an 'A'.

Just In: My doctor says I need more potassium and that's bananas.

Obviously the big movie this weekend is X-Men. I don't know if I've seen a bad review of it yet. I always kind of felt the first three X-Men movies were bad. I didn't even bother watching Wolverine. Something about this one though has called to me from the start. Apparently it messes a bit with the continuity of the X-verse, throwing characters together who never were in the comics. I'm sure some comic geeks will be up in arms about that. Personally I have no problem with it. Recreating timelines, mixing and matching, happens all the time in comic books. Why shouldn't they do it in movies? At any rate I'm totally geared up for it.

However...

However there's also Submarine which opens limited this weekend. It's a film I've been anticipating for quite awhile. Directed and written by Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh) who has long been a favorite British comedic actor of mine. The film is about a 15 year old who's goal is to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Much as that sounds like the pitch for a raunchy teen sex comedy, it's more of a coming of age... Well, sex comedy. Take a look at the trailer:

The French cinema overtones seem offbeat enough to make it interesting.  Reviews I've read so far have been pretty favorable. If it's playing anywhere in the area it's one I definitely plan on catching.

Play the GameSpeaking of sex comedies... I caught Play the Game the other day. When you read the summary of the film -A man teaches his grandfather (Andy Griffith) how to pick up women at his retirement home, but can't get his own game to work on a girl- You say to yourself, it can't be that raunchy, after all it has Andy Griffith in it. Oh my, that's a misguided thought. Don't get me wrong, it's far from being an American Pie movie, but it certainly earns its PG-13 rating. It's independent and low budget which makes for some off acting in places, and not always the greatest film quality. But despite that it's a pretty clever little film with lots to laugh at. And with a supporting cast that includes Geoffry Owens (Elvin from the Cosby Show!), Clint Howard (reunited with Griffith at last), Rance Howard (father of Clint & Ron Howard), and Dorris Roberts... you know there's something special about this film. Not for a younger audience, but if you don't mind a little raunchy humor, than I highly recommend it. 7.5 out of 10 (Oh, and yes, it streams on Netflix)

If you do watch it make sure to stay through the end credits. Past me to future you, 'You're welcome.'

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. That banana joke had no place in this review, and thus, made it all the more funny. Kudos.

  2. I would say the main problem with continuity issues is that they look to be rewriting the well established origin of the x-men.  I have heard it is a good movie as well, but I am not sold yet.

  3. Liked the bananas reference.  It made me laugh.  Hope you are getting your potassium.  You definitely don't want to get it from an IV because it burns like hell!!
Thanks for the movie reviews - as always I am amazed that you can do it in 7 words!  Have an awesome weekend

I dug the first three X:Men movies and thought Wolverine was okay. But just came from First Class, and it was a lot of fun. Really enjoyed the backstory of Charles and Erik.

  6. How many more X-Men movies are they going to make before I have even seen the first one?

  8. I disagree with camel - that banana joke would be good in any post.

Also that trailer is bizarre/fantastic ... I hadn't heard of that movie but now I'm bummed houston has a terrible indie selection.
