The Change-Up, Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Weekend Review

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

The Change-Up - Doesn't really seem that different to me.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Led by Magilla Gorilla and Grape Ape.

I'd watch that.

As I've said before, I'm really not a fan of Planet of the Apes. I've watched a couple movies from the series and thought it was kind of dull. When the Tim Burton version came out, I was... Well let's just say that was a low point in my regards for Burton. The new one however just screams watch me. From the early reviews, it sounds fantastic.  Sure it has a decent cast, James Franco, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, but let's face it, it's all about the apes. I want apes, I want mayhem and destruction. Any story, script, and acting is gravy. I also want a version done with classic cartoon apes, cause that would kill.

Guess which movie I have no real interest in this weekend? If you answered Black Mama, White Mama , well, yeah, that goes without saying. But I was specifically referring to The Change-Up. Despite it's marketing, I highly doubt it's going to reinvent the wheel where body switching comedy is concerned. I like Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman in the right roles, but the commercials have done little win me over. Half the ads are toilet humor, and if that's really the best they've got to offer, I hate to think of what the rest of the film is filled with.

Now, a film about reinventing the wheel... I'd be all over that. Set in the year 2025 (assuming man is still alive) a scientist dares to suggest a switch: Metal tires on a rubber road. Starring Anton Yelchin and oh, let's say Olivia Wilde. She's attached her name to so many projects, she might as well attach it to my imaginary film as well.

What do you want from me, it's a slow weekend. Here, listen to this and let your troubles wash away:

Mumford & Sons covering Not In Nottingham, from Disney's 70's cartoon Robin Hood. That's the best right there.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. They show the trailer for the Change Up at inappropriate hours.

  3. I've never been a big fan of the series either. But since it's eight-five percent on Rotten Tomatoes, I'll check it out.

  4. The Change-up Commercials are lacking, but not because of the toilet humor. I love toilet humor.

  5. Me loves the monkeys. And the last 40 minutes of that movie is filled with monkey mayhem goodness but you really have to slog through some animal cruelty first as if the message needed to REALLY be hammered home. So should you miss seeing this one. Ceasar says "NO!!"

  6. Bud, What's an appropriate time anymore? They show ED commercials during cartoons on Saturday morning.

    Alex, it's a good sign.

Camel, I do too, I just meant, that I feel a commercial should always lead with a taste of the best, and all it's offering are weak Thai food jokes and public urination.

And if I needed anymore confirmation that it'll rock, ROTPOTA has Kal's endorsement. Seriously, I can't wait to see it.

  7. I don't know, I hear great things about Planet of the Apes...and that main chimp Caesar looks creepy as hell when he's in evil/beast mode.

  8. The Apes movie does look terrific. I can't stand to see animal cruelty so I'll give it a pass.

  9. The Apes do nothing for me. Never did like 'em....sorry. The Change-Up sounds like another "re-done" story...BUT...I'll watch Jason Bateman in anything because I think he's freaking funny.

  10. Man, that song always used to make me tear up, especially when all the animals are walking in chains. Thanks for causing me to remember it!
