Contagion, Warrior, Burke & Hare: Weekend Review

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star - Absolutely no good can come of this.

Burke & Hare (limited) - Yes, yes, yes, yes, *taking breath* yes.

Contagion - No, no, no, no, *taking breath* no.

Warrior - Maybe, maybe, may- yeah, that joke's done...

Don't take my no's to mean that I don't want to see Contagion. It's more the, I don't want to face some super bird flu outbreak, type of no. Soderbergh's film about a pandemic has had a lot of good early word. I don't get creeped out by zombie flicks or slasher films, but when done right, a good virus movie can properly chill me. I look forward to seeing the film, though, I'm really not pressed to go to a theater for it. I find these kind of films are best when watched in the dark, late at night, when your mind is properly open to the ideas. Certainly I don't need to see it on IMAX, which for some reason it's being shown on. I like filling my eyes with a giant screen as much as the next guy, but with sick people on it? Pass.

Don't take my yes's to mean that I want to be involved with stealing corpses and selling them to a medical school. It's more the, I want to see Burke & Hare, type of yes. Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis are just a part of an amazing cast that includes Bill Bailey, Tim Curry, Christopher Lee, Jessica Hynes, and Isla Fisher. The movie was released last year in the UK and has some fairly mixed opinion. Course, what black comedy doesn't? It's been available On Demand, but I haven't yet gotten around to it. Hopefully I'll get to it soon as it should be pretty funny.

There's been a lot of buzz about Warrior, though I'll be honest, I haven't really paid much attention to it. It has a decent cast with Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte heading it up. What has kept me disinterested is that I'm not really into MMA, which serves as the backdrop for the film. If it's as good as some have made it out to be then I'll check it out later. And I admit, I do like the idea of brothers in a ring beating the heck out of each other.

What are you planning on watching this weekend?

  1. I'm not sure about Contagion either. It's supposed to be grim. Like I need more things to worry about!

  3. Bird flu seems to be revisiting Asia ...don't watch to catch or watch others catch something similar...why does the title remind me of Robin Cooks books??...
Dark comedy seems the way to go....
Sorry Tim, my witty cells are on a prolonged hiatus. ;(

  5. Not movie, but TV, lots of renovation shows. I love them. Perhaps someone should write a DIY renovation on a spaceship and how things go wrong.

  9. Oooh.....I love "virus" movies (almost as much as disaster movies). Black comedies...I have to be in the right mood for! Some are really good - others, meh.

  10. Trashy online showbiz gossip says Warriors has producer's-boyfriend type of casting. Not that that's always a bad thing.

  12. thanks Tim!
I'm with you, the thought of some amazing and crazy virus, scares the hell out of me. Now if the people who die from the virus reanimate, that would be awesome...
