Big Miracle, The Woman in Black, Chronicle: 7 Word Weekend Review

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Big Miracle - Whale's Take: Is that a fat joke?

The Innkeepers (limited) - Nice try not The Woman in Black.

The Woman in Black - Here comes woman in black. Galaxy defender...

Chronicle - They had me at teens abusing powers.

I think quite possibly I've watched Groundhog's Day every day other than Groundhog's Day. I realize that 364 viewings seems like a low estimate, but I'll stick to that.

It's not that I'm anti-animal -I fully believe in preserving, taking care and not abusing- but I tend to roll my eyes at animal activists. Course I do that with any activist really... This has translated to an odd intolerance for movies that revolve around saving over glorified fish. When Free Willy came out I was probably the only one in my class who couldn't care less. Mind you, Big Miracle is a totally different type of beast of a film, with completely different themes and tangents. Not to mention the whole based on a true blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah (bet you think the number of blahs is random. It's not, I had a rhythm going). But to make a long story short -too late- (I wonder how many people will get the Clue reference?) you'll forgive me if I roll my eyes, yawn and try not to think too hard about this movie. Even if it does the guy from The Office. Sure, I know his name is John Krasinski, but it's easier to say guy from The Office than trying to remember if I spelled his name right. Course, I just defeated the whole point of it by still spelling out his name, but what ya' gonna do?

I am really interested in seeing The Woman in Black. I've enjoyed Daniel Radcliffe in other non-Potter roles, and I like the look and tone of the trailers. I haven't read the novel it's based on, though I keep meaning to. Still it looks proper spooky and that's my cup of tea. Mind you though I really see it as more of a rental if for no other reason than...

I really want to see Chronicle. I have since the first preview. It just makes me think of a dozen Twilight Zone episodes rolled into one movie. It's direct and co-written by Josh Trank who was a co-producer of Big Fan. I'm hoping that lends to a much darker tone for the film. And yes it does fall under the category of a Found Footage film, but from everything I've heard, the film really rises above and beyond that, largely playing that for good, and as a way to cheapen the quality of the film work. And seriously, if the trailers weren't enough to sell me, their marketing was. Check out this video of a marketing stunt they did for the film:

How cool is that?

I must say it's nice having my internet up and running again. Now if I can just budget more time for blogging I'll be a happy camper.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. I caught the blah rhythm.
Chronicle will be first on my list this weekend. Might see Woman in Black. Although now I'm going to watch it with the words "Galaxy defender" going through my head!

  2. I think I'm totally with you on these. It would be a miracle if you could get me to watch Big Miracle. No way...
The Woman in Black for sure I'm seeing. Chronicle is probably a definite maybe. Thank you my friend for the non-reviews! You make me life easier and help control my over consumption of popcorn.

  4. Definitely want to see the last two badly. I've never seen any of the Potter kids in non Potter roles, so I think that will be interesting.

  5. It makes me angry how people will get together and do anything and spend anything to save animals when people can go ahead and die without health care and some politicians want to get rid of food stamps for the poor. There, I got that off my chest.

That video is great. If I saw those men flying over the city I would think they were X-Men or something. Glad you have the internet back.

  6. Yeh you spoiled Woman in Black for me because you led me to believe it was a space adventure but apparantly it takes place on a very foggy Earth. What a rip off.

  7. How cool a stunt is that? I wonder how many people who saw them thought they were real for a sec?

  9. Oooh I had not seen any ads for chronicle but that does look good.

And I had seen a picture of those 3 "flying people" but I just thought it was some random prank. Now it makes more sense.
