The Dark Knight Rises

I'd already decided not to do a 7 word review this week as the only film out is Batman, but in light of the events I thought I'd say a few words.

Safe to say that this is the movie that a lot of us have been waiting to see this year. The conclusion to Nolan's Batman Trilogy. It's horrible that even as many of us brave our way through the crowds to find some quiet sanctuary in what should always be a safe place, that a dozen people have lost their lives today because they happened to be in the same theater as an evil man. We go to theaters because they're a quiet place where we can relax, and let go of reality for a few hours. So we can communally enjoy film, bonding, without even talking to the strangers around us. An experience that happens millions of times each year.

I'm sure in the coming days talk will turn to movies influencing people, and Batman inspiring the shooter, and the like. This will always be connected with The Dark Knight Rises, but it's a senseless tragedy that would be heartbreaking no matter what the surroundings. And ultimately it's about the people that were there simply to enjoy a movie. Friends, family, strangers, connected by a shared excitement. People like us.

I will be heading out to see the film this weekend, as I'm sure many of you will, even as other are reeling from their personal tragedies. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and the families who were shattered by this.

  1. TS, this was a truly senseless act. Attacking strangers for attending a movie of the year is so sick. Thanks for your sensitivity.

  2. Absolutely horrific. Pure evil.
We went to see it around lunchtime. I did keep an eye on the exit doors down front until the movie began. And it was incredible.

  3. Truly an unbelievable act. I guess going to see movies at 2PM on a Tuesday when there maybe 10 people in the theatre is not such a bad move. I can't even image what this felt like as it was going down.

  4. Well said ... I've never thought of a movie as a silent bonding experience, but that's a good point.

  6. I am shocked at one of the victims that left his fiancee and children in the theater to save himself. What a coward.

  7. Such a terrible thing! I hope to see the movie this weekend myself. I'm sure I'll be thinking about what happened in Colorado.

  8. Very well said. It does indeed appear that some men just want to watch the world burn. Sad.
