Weekend Movie Discussion: Warm Bodies, The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, and My Boyfriend's Back

"Tis better to have loved and lost, n'est ce pas?" -Pauly Shore

Two horror-ish movies out this weekend. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia and the much anticipated by teenage girls (and myself) everywhere, Warm Bodies.

I vaguely remember The Haunting In Connecticut. Some rubbish about being based on a true story. I love whenever that claim is made for a crappy horror film. You know the true part is something like they went out for milk... And not something substantial. I'll admit I am a little curious how Georgian based ghosts are haunting Connecticut. Perhaps a gay ghost couple from the south a couple decades ago moved there to avoid persecution. Maybe it's more of a metaphor for deeply buried secrets. You may have your skeletons in the closet, but these Georgian ghosts are rising! Whatever the case, it's not for me.

Warm Bodies on the other hand is totally for me. I've heard it's pretty different from the book, which is fine cause I never intend to read it. Anyhoo, it's about a zombie who falls in love with a girl and slowly starts coming back to life, all the while caught in a war between zombies, man, and a different kind of zombie. It looks flippin hilarious. It also looks like it's taking that PG-13 rating and stretching it just about as far as it can go without snapping. Which is good, cause even with humor, if you're going to watch a zombie film, it might as well be gory.

Actually I was thinking of a different zombie(ish) movie the other day. Anyone remember My Boyfriend's Back? I used to love that movie in a completely non ironic way. Fantastically stupid, B-movie fun. Aside from the main stars it was the film that first introduced me to the ever awesome Austin Pendleton who played the seriously cracked Dr. Bronson. One scene in particular I always loved where the zombie lead's ear has fallen off and the Dr. asks, with smile on his face, if he can keep it. You also have the briefest of bit roles for Matthew McConaughey and Philip Seymour Hoffman who I might add, gets eaten. Seriously, if you haven't ever seen the film, get on that. If you have, don't you feel like revisiting it now?

But back to Austin Pendleton. It's funny, cause I was watching a movie he did with Alan Arkin called Raising Flagg (not a bad family flick -little slow moving at times, but funny) when I started wondering why no one has made a documentary about him. Lo and behold, I looked him up on imdb and found that in fact there is one underway. They even did a fundraising thing for the project. Not kickstarter, but some such similar thing. No idea when that will come out, but it's certainly something to keep an eye out for.

So what are your plans for the weekend? Out to see a little horror at the old theater? Some good old fashioned, family, zombie action?
