7 Word Weekend Movie Discussion: The Amazing Spider-Man, And I Dub J.J. Abrams 'J²'

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

The Amazing Spider-Man - I'm told this is about nuclear disarmament?

Remember when Marvel created a complex universe on film with stand alone films that were also connected? Remember when Sony decided they were going to do that with just the Spider-Man franchise? I have no idea how the Sinister Six or Venom films will look, but if the current iteration of Spidey is any indication, I lack what you'd call any faith in it.

The last Spider-Man was plagued by problems but still had many fans. Several quick to jump on and say it was better than Raimi's (which baffles me). The Amazing Spider-Man looks to continue with the mediocrity having already elicited many negative reviews. When contrast against the excellent Captain America that's also currently in theaters, it really serves to highlight just how ahead of everyone else Marvel really is.

What's that you say, I need a good segue here?

Speaking of segues, I don't have one. What I do have, if you haven't seen it yet, is the trailer for the hilarious looking What We Do in the Shadows, a vampire mockumentary starring Jemaine Clement. Check it out:

Finally in other news, the new Star Wars cast was announced. Noticeably absent was my name. Once again my petition to play Chewbacca's young, fat, slacker brother has been denied. Just picture a scene where Hans has what everyone assumes is a bear skin rug on his floor, but it turns out just to be me napping. Here I thought I fit all the qualifications too, being male and all. Oh, well, your loss .

What are your plans this weekend? Do they involve a red and blue arachnid-guy? Were you also shunned by J² Abrams?

  1. Actually, I'm seeing the new Spider-Man this afternoon. I liked the last one. Raimi's were good until the third one.

  2. In Raimi's defence, he was never in favor of Venom or overstuffing the film.

  3. I didn't Like the first Amazing Spider-Man that much, so now after seeing this new one I like it less. It has promise, then it tell that promise to take a flying leap! Some of it is predictable, and some of it is too cartoony.

  4. Agree with the cartoony. Waste of Andrew Garfield, who I actually like as Spidey. Disappointing to say the least.

  5. I've been shunned by everyone. Even the ticket seller for this movie. So, I guess I'll have to miss it.
