Weekend Movie Discussion: Maleficent, A Million Ways to Die in the West

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

A Million Ways to Die in the West - One would be good enough for me...

Maleficent - Suggested tagline: Something wicked that way went.

It's a pretty off week for me at the movies. I'm not by any means a Seth MacFarlane fan. I used to like Family Guy but that quickly wore out its welcome. His humor, so called, just doesn't appeal to me. A Million Ways to Die in the West acting like it's the heir apparent to Blazing Saddles looks flat to me in the trailers. I haven't read anything about it that would convince me otherwise. I'm sure it'll do well enough given the success of Ted, unless audiences find don't take to actually seeing MacFarlane. It's always possible.

With Maleficent, I love the character. Disney's Sleeping Beauty built a wonderfully evil villain who carried with her a load of delicious foreboding. So it was that even though I don't care for Angelina Jolie, I was prepared to give it a try when they first started talking it up. Then came the trailers and the reviews (mixed). I don't like the idea that the movie makes her a sympathetic character. We have that twist with Wicked, and that's good enough. I don't need, nor want every monster to be humanized. Half the fun of Maleficent is how delightfully monstrous she is. Why ruin that?

Oh, well, as they say: you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and there you have, the facts of life. The facts of life.

What do you think of this week's releases?

  1. Nothing will be Blazing Saddles again.
My kids want to see Maleficent.

I told them that when they can pronounce it, then I might take them.

  2. What a splendid overview Tim. How true that it'll do well enough, but there's no way it's any better than "Blazing Saddles." It's a classic. As for Maleficent I don't want my villains to be likeable. I want them to be evil and ,preferably, British. Here's hoping you have a rad weekend.

  3. Another of Disney's female-empowerment yarns, and a worthy one at that.
