Weekend Movie Discussion: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Boyhood

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Lot of shaggy dudes need a shave.

Boyhood - This joke took 12 years to make.

This has already been a pretty fantastic year for movies, and we're only in July. This week DOTPOTA is out, and I'm a happy camper. The last film managed to convert me from someone who never cared for the series, into a full-on, frothing at the mouth fan. The new one takes place 10 years after the previous one. To bridge this gap, there were three videos released online. While not required to jump into the new film, they are pretty fun. And if you haven't seen them yet, I've got them all lined up here for you:

Spread of the Simian flu (year 1)

Struggling to survive (year 5)

Story of the gun (year 10)

Pretty fun I thought. Especially enjoyed the last one using a gun to tell multiple stories.

Also out in very limited release is one of my other super anticipated films, Boyhood. Richard Linklater took 12 years to film his story, using the same child actor as he grew up on film. It looks amazing and has rave reviews. Hoping it'll expand to a nearby theater at some point.

What do you think of the two films out this weekend?

  1. Thanks, I hadn't seen those yet!
You summed up my views. My wife drug me to the last one and I was stunned I liked it so much. Seeing the new one this afternoon.

  2. I never thought a reboot would work, but I'm a believer Tim. That year 5 clip is very touching.

  3. I plan on going Ape myself...It just seems kinda weird that Commissioner Gordon is anti Ape...

  4. I know nothing of Boyhood, but I will see the apes monkey around.
