Weekend Movie Discussion: Blended, X-Men: Days of Future Past

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Blended - Can't we lock Sandler in a cupboard?

X-Men: Days of Future Past - My suggested tagline: Making today yesterday, tomorrow.

Look I'm not suggesting we kill Adam Sandler, I'm not inhuman; just merely that we lock him away in a closet, cupboard, safe, whatever's handy. Yes, he was funny once, but that was a long time ago. Blended sounds like the kind of tripe one would usually find on the Hallmark Channel. I should know, I have, for various reasons, subjected myself to that tripe. But with Adam Sandler, you know it's going to be crude and likely gross in places, which eliminates it from being the kind of movie you can safely watch with your 93 year old gram gram. Since that's really the only thing going for Hallmark films, why would anyone subject themselves to this torture?

And then Spider-Man died...

It's memorial day weekend, and as such movies usually get a bounce. But with how well Neighbors and Godzilla have done, I don't see Spidey getting much of a bounce against X-Men: Days of Future Past. Not only are we talking direct superhero competition, we're talking a storyline that had (us) geeks whipped into a frenzy since it was first announced. And even though it's Bryan Singer back at the helm, I've already punched my ticket. Good as the last X-Men film? Eeeh... No. Better than the other X-Films? Hey now, there's a certainty we can deal in.

It's pretty amazing how quickly my top anticipated movie can change. If you've followed TNR for awhile you probably know that I'm a huge fan of Corner Gas. The Canadian sitcom, clearly influenced by the classic shows I loved as a kid, speaks to me on a whole other level. They called it quits after 6 seasons because they didn't want to become repetitive. Meanwhile us fans have wanted more ever since. Well, the surprise news came this week that they're making a movie. They've already got the script, the backing, and are about to start filming. They even put out a kickstarter, not for the funds so much, but to let the fans get in on it. That goal was pretty much destroyed in a day, such is the love for the show. Anyway, it's supposed to be out in December, and I'm hoping that includes stateside too. Huzzah.

You know me, I like to end on a down note, so let me ask this, what do you guys think of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, title? It's pretty awful to me. Went from being a Superman sequel, to a Batman/Superman sequel, to basically saying in the title it's a prequel to Justice League. Talk about your identity crisis on infinite earths (he said, making the joke for the 50th time since Wednesday).

So what do you guys think of the movies out this weekend?

  2. I'm excited about XMen but won't get to go see it because hubby is out of town and I have all the kids. Some of them are too young to see it. I hope you have a great weekend!!

  3. I will have to wait on X-Men. My wife said I have had enough me time with Godzilla lattley. Sandler will be in the next Star Wars movie as a reimagined Jar Jar named Happy Madison.

  4. The other day I was talking to my wife about how sick I am of Sandler\Barrymore rom-coms. I said there were six, but Google corrected me. It's three, but it feels like three too many. I used to love Sandler on SNL and some of his movies, but he's so rich no one can tell him to cut a stupid joke. Anyway the winner this week will be X-Men although I'm not sure if I'll be able to catch it opening day.

  6. Shh! Don't speak of such evils lest someone get the idea and start making it happen. If Sandler comes waddling out of J² Abrams' mystery box, we'll know who was really responsible.

  10. I will see X-Men, but out of this group, that is probably the only one.
Hey, I know where we can store Adam Sandler! How about the Iron Door Cave?
