Weekend Movie Discussion: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Saving Mr. Banks, American Hustle

True story: I saw that Walking With Dinosaurs is out this weekend in 3D, and I said to myself "I'm way too old for this kind of film" and then suddenly my 13 year old self came running out of nowhere and kicked me in the groin.

Well played 13 year old me. Well played indeed.

Here's what's out this weekend:

3. American Hustle is one of two movies going wide this week. It's got that whole David O. Russel feel to it. Largely I assume because he directed it. It's loaded down with people like Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Tom Wopat. Okay, not Tom Wopat, but it's just nice to remember he exists sometimes. Especially since his pivotal role in Django Unchained went largely unnoticed. But I digress. Whether or not it's supposed to, it looks like a silly film. I mean that in the best of ways.

2. Saving Mr. Banks also goes wide this week. At long last we'll get to see the dark side of Walt Disney. The child hating socio... Oh, he just smokes in this film? Alright, that works equally well. Tom Hanks didn't get the attention he was after with Captain Phillips, so here's round 2 of aiming for an Oscar nod. Meanwhile somewhere in a sad corner of the world, Peter Scolari is sobbing uncontrollably, wondering whatever happened to his Bosom Buddy.

1. Finally, released on Tuesday was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. It's not often there's a high anticipation from critics and fans alike for a sequel to a comedy, but here it is. The genius of the original can't be denied. Nor can the amount of quotes that came forth from it. Expect just as much this go round to get tired of hearing people endlessly quoting from the movie for the next decade. I'll likely be one of them...

Question: Who do you think would win in a fight, Federico Fellini's 8½, or Jean-Luc Godard's Two or Three Things I Know About Her?

Answer: Well obviously Fellini's film. It has Godard's beat by 5 or 6 and a half.

I'm willing to bet that at least one person found that funny, and he's currently typing these words. Oh well, as long as someone found it amusing.

So what's on your docket this weekend? Got plans to check out the news? Catching a little Disney film? Going for a walk with dinosaurs? Feeling a Peter Scolari and Tom Wopat buddy film is what the world needs? How many boiled eggs do you think you could fit into your mouth at one time?

  1. I scored free tickets to see American Hustle at my local comic book store...but sadly can't go. Peter Scolari is still in drag and waiting for Toms return!

  2. That may have been the first kick in the groin, that served a purpose. Every time I've been kicked in the groin, I just cried.

I will never see Anchorman, Anchorman 2, or Anchorman 3 though 11. Will Ferrell does nothing for me.

I hope to see American Hustle this weekend.
