7 Word Weekend Movie Review: Morning Glory, Unstoppable, and Skyline sucks

New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each

Morning Glory - This just in: I think I'll pass.

Unstoppable - A good movie or a... train wreck?

Skyline - This movie has really sucked me in.

I'd like to tell you I feel about the pun-ish quality of the reviews today, but someone once said something about living without regret. Actually many people have said something along those lines. I'm pretty sure eschewing guilt is what they were talking about.

I have to wonder if the early release of Morning Glory is to try and grab a few bucks before it gets destroyed by the other two films opening wide this weekend. I don't know if it's just the marketing but it doesn't look appealing to me in any way. None of the previews I've seen really told me what it was about. I had to go and read the synopsis for that. I like Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams but not enough to trust a movie's quality based on their names alone. Right now it seems like a pass and it'll take some good word of mouth to change my mind.

I'm sure it's going to be dramatic with pulse pounding train action, but Unstoppable, looks a bit dull to me. Mostly because once again it's Denzel playing a variation of the same role he always does with Chris Pine as the interchangeable co-star. I'll probably love it on cable but for now I choose to ignore it.

I keep hearing bad things about Skyline. There's been a lot of word that the best stuff is in the trailers. There weren't really any advance screenings and that's not usually a good sign. There's been comparisons to bad SyFy channel films. On the other hand, I've come to realize that what I want in a movie is people being sucked up into the sky. It may seem specific, and it is, but I'm just really at a point in my life where I want to see that.

On the staying in front, this week saw the release of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I still think it's the best movie of the year. By the fact that it was sold out at a couple of the stores I visited, I would suspect there are others who feel the same way. So if you didn't see it in theaters, get thee to a video store or Netflix or whatever it is you crazy kids are using these days.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  3. I screened Morning Glory on Monday. It's actually a surprisingly entertaining and funny comedy. Not really a romantic comedy at all, more of a romance of a woman and her job.

I think the reason they released it on Wednesday was to build word of mouth because Paramount seems to be saving their pennies on marketing with this movie. It's not targeting the same audience as Skyline or Unstoppable.

Unstoppable looks like a good one while Skyline looks sci-fy channel-ish.

  4. Castor, I don't mean to suggest they're hitting the same targeted demo so much as that it's always about numbers on the opening weekend. And as they didn't really advertise, I'd say they're still after a boost.

  8. Morning glory to me is Broadcast news meets Sabrina (the remake). Yeah, sadly i heard skyline is no ID4. Although to some people it may be. Depending on what they thought about that movie.

  9. I know I'll see Skyline and Unstoppable...if for no other reason than I am on a one-word-title high right now. (Red, Faster, Machete, etc.)

  10. Haha I enjoy your very niche market tastes. You want what you want - and that's cool.

  11. See, this is why I wait until they come out in DVD and then pick up a pre-viewed copy for cheap. (Don't have to deal with texters or chair kickers, either...ha!) Love the reviews... so far, you've been pretty darned close in mimicking my tastes!

  12. But I really wanted to waste thirty bucks this weekend. What am I going to do with that money now? I suppose I could just use it to buy two bags of popcorn and a teeny tiny soda, and then just stand in lines so everyone thinks I'm a cool movie-going dude. If I do that for a long enough time I can say I spent six hours in the movie theater this weekend which cost me thirty bucks. No one needs to know the details. Thanks TS!

  13. Unlike many stars I like me a good steady Denzel movie every six months or so. He is solid everytime, he works with a good young rising star like Chris Pine (who forever gained my support after he resisted the urge to play a young Kirk as a dickish fratboy which the character certainly would have been during his Star Fleet days.) I also like runaway train movies like the criminally underrated 'Runaway Train' with John Voight and Eric Roberts. You ever seen it? That movie made me feel what COLD actually feels like from inside a warm theatre. Trust me, I KNOW from cold. I was on Baffin Island when the second coldest day recorded in HUMAN HISTORY happened. Now there is a post. What were we talking about again?

  15. my daughter and her BF saw Skyline yesterday and both liked it. They said it won't win any academy awards, but it is certainly worth seeing!
    Thanks for the reviews...
