Weekend Movie Discussion: The Internship, The Purge, Much Ado About Nothing

Once upon a long time ago there was an actor named Owen Wilson who I thought was brilliant. Then he did a whole lot of crap. Once again he's decided to pair up with Vince Vaughn, causing an involuntary sigh to issue out from me upon seeing the first trailer for The Internship

In short it's about two hapless salesmen who get internships with Google. Google alone strikes me as a horrible idea. They couldn't just go with some nameless search engine and allow for parody? Google's hardly going to let them abuse their name in anyway truly fun, which means it's going to be an hour and a half commercial disguised as comedy. Though from the way the trailer is laid out one can assume there will be an ample amount of geek jokes. You know the kind where someone who thinks they understand what properties us self proclaimed geeks actually enjoy, their information sourced from old episodes of The Big Bang Theory, which in turn stole the old stereotypes from other shows and movies.

There'll also be plenty of we're old and out of touch with what's cool these days gags. Yippee.

The flip side wide release this week is The Purge. I like the idea behind it. It sounds like an old sci-fi concept, reimagined. That said I've seen mostly tepid reviews, and honestly, I've never been much of a fan of Ethan Hawke. I might give it a try one cold wintry day in the future (the kind where you say to yourself how about a cup of tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich? only to find that you're out of cheese), but that's about all I'm willing to give.

Man, I could go for some tomato soup right about now.

In limited release is Joss Whedon's new version of Much Ado About Nothing. Shot in twelve days, in black and white. I'm more than willing to dive into it. I'm not huge on Shakespeare, but I have always loved MAAN for its screwball nature. Unfortunately, limited in this instance probably means five or six screens showing it, so I'll have to wait for that one.

Guess That Movie

I thought it might be fun to add a game to the weekend. Rules are simple, I'll post a picture, you guess what it is. Bonus points if you can come up with a good caption too!

This week's:

So what are your plans for the weekend? Do you have a higher threshold for Vince Vaughn than I do? Plan to see The Purge? Did you guess the film right away?

  1. No idea on the movie, but the caption should be "We're three grown men who've made some really bad decisions in life."
Anything by Whedon I'll eventually see. Just not sold on the premise of the Purge though.

  2. I know Whedon is trying hard to get Ado into theaters and I respect that. He could just coast on all that Avengers money, but he's trying hard to stay true to his artistic integrity. The Purge is a terrifying concept, but we'll see if it pans out.
    "Needs more cowbell!"

  3. I am intrigued by the Purge so I am sure I will see it...on DVD. Isn't that the remake of Three Blind Mice??

  4. It's a "Stray Cats" cover band, taking their hobby too literally.

I hate Vince Vaughn. He never looks people in the eye, and it creeps me out.

  5. I can not even begin to guess that movie.

But I totally want to see The Purge. I think the premise is kind of dumb when you really sit down to think it through, but I don't care. I just want to turn my brain off and watch some people get killed while I eat popcorn.

  6. No idea what the movie is. Are you going to eventually tell us? Or make my brain explode...ha
I'm not going to any movies this weekend but if I could go to see one of them it would be MAAN. Love me some Whedon.
